The course grade will be determined on the basis of midterm and final (for a total of about 50% of grade), problem sets and in-class work will make up the remainder. We will try to run classes in an interrogative style and we expect all students to carefully read the assigned papers, as you will be quizzed on their content in class.
Midterm
The course will include a 5 to 8 page (not including references) class project, which will count as the midterm. The paper is a research proposal, for an fMRI experiment, to be performed by the class as a lab.
Due to time limitations it is likely that only one experiment from the class will be selected for actual scanning. In preparing the manuscript, please take into account the practical limitations in experimental design imposed by the method and consider that the subject population will consist of graduate student volunteers, (who are presently enrolled in M285).
Due to the large class size, we ask that you work in teams of two to three. If you have found a partner, more power to you, if not, consider sending out an e-mail to the whole class list with your favorite content area, to see if anyone else wants to collaborate. All registered students midterms will be graded and scored carefully. Those from auditors may receive less intense and somewhat slower scrutiny.
The document should be divided (as a research grant proposal) into:

Final
The final will be a combination essay and calculation exam. We will hand out the final as a take-home exam, to be returned midway through finals week.
