EMERGENCIES DURING SCAN

• Smoke or sparks appear from scanning equipment • Fire in building

For each of the above, the procedure is to:

  1. Halt the scan and remove the subject.
    1. Press the EMERGENCY STOP button on the console to abort the scan
    2. Grasp and turn the cradle release handle, located at the foot end of the patient bed. Pull the cradle all the way out onto the transport table. Make certain that the cradle is fully retracted, or it will not undock.
    3. Move the side rails of the table into the vertical position
    4. Undock the transport by stepping on the "UNDOCK" foot pedal.
    5. Keeping the subject on the transport, wheel the patient table out of the scan room.

  2. In case of FIRE, dial 911.

  3. Attempt to contact Mark Cohen. Campus number 310/980-7453. Home number 818/225-0740, e-mail mscohen@ucla.edu

  4. Page GE service engineer, Manuel Garcia (626) 835-3490 . Leave a voice mail at (800) 525-1516 ext. 113193

  5. Shutdown the scanner. The procedure for doing so is located on the last page of this manual.

  6. Call the UCLA Page Operator (56301 or 310/825-6301 from an off-campus phone) and ask to page the party on call for "Brain Mapping MR Lab emergencies"

If you are unable to get direct responses from either Mark Cohen, or Manuel Garcia, the following personnel should be notified (in order). Keep trying until one of these individuals has been reached.
